The English district has always been a cultural commons, a place where the none-English can actually find enough people to build a group, with an increased chance of everyone sharing a common language (oh look, there's that word again!). Changing the name of the district has changed absolutely nothing. I believe they have said they will change it back, but I hope they don't just out of spite.

Lets put this into perspective. The actual numbers of non-English speakers isn't going to change because of a district name-change. If people have a district that can cater to their language, they will default there, if not they go to English. If they need more players they are still likely to go to English. None of this has changed. The ONLY thing that has changed is that a few people with a specific mindset have had their pride dented. That's it. This hasn't changed the use of the district, but more accurately labeled the current use of the district. In essence, people are literally complaining about a word being different. Epic.
Do you actually play in European Districts?

I do, and I've seen a change since the name was changed. People that speak languages that have their own dedicated districts have increased in numbers, most of them in Trade Chat.

The loss of a place where you can be assured that you know that your language, the most spoken language in the world, has been eliminated. Sure there's a high probability that there will be people that speak English, but there's still that chance. And since the update, that chance that they won't speak English has gone up.

FF11 manages to defeat the language barrier via an 'auto translate' function.

What's my point? I seem to never get over my surprise and shock when every new MMO I try out is, yet again and invariably, segregated into Geographical/Linguistic play-regions (be it IP restrictions on game-server access, or in this case, language-specific channels which seemingly include IP identifiers as to the client's locale in order to access -- i.e. I am running a client in NA, I have never seen these 'French' etc. channels as on option for me to join).

I am apalled at the xenophobia and Linguistic Primacy displayed in this thread.

This thread is a massive phail, and, it would seem, Guild Wars as well.

Well then, I have some Dutch friends and a Russian LS to hang out with, as well as some cool Japanese people I've met over the years, back 'home' in FF11. Have fun in your Bigot Wars universe, folks, I for one am happily uninstalling this game for it is frequented by a sad, sad lot.
Guild Wars doesn't have an auto translate, get over it. Besides, I've heard that the FF auto translators sometimes fail badly. I also bet they wouldn't be able to translate "i pwn nad u r al teh suxxors"

If all Europeans were in the same district (like they were at first), it would be chaos. It only makes sense to give each major language a place to be spoken, in order to help people find others that can understand them.

Wanting your own place to speak your own language is far from xenophobia, it's wanting a place to call your own.

Yes, there aren't as many people in their districts to buy and sell to, so they come to the place with the common language. They've always done that, you're just looking for it more now. But since you have pointed the migration effect out, tell me again how you want an English language only district where other-language speakers don't switch over to English due to the increased population. What are you going to do, ban district switching?

Yeah, I'm having difficulty parsing that sentence. I'm guessing you're saying that you're no longer assured that you will understand every word spoken in the district. Well, you've never had that assurance to start with. Secondly, what do you care if you can't understand every word? Are you really that paranoid? Thirdly, I'm glad you pointed out that our language is the most spoken in the world as you surely now understand why we have to actually be the common district?

I really don't understand you at all. Nothing has gone up since the update, but so what if it did? Because we speak the common global language, people of other languages either have to come to our district or want to for an increased audience when building teams or selling items, and you don't like it. Fine. How do you propose to stop it? Ah yes, an English district and a separate commons district without a common language. And how are you going to stop them coming back to our district? Ban people from switching districts and lock them into their own unpopulated and incommunicable little wasteland? We speak the same language as our first language as most other Europeans speak as their second. This means that a) most Europeans that don't have a district are better suited to the Commons district, and b) the Commons district is going to have the largest population, causing players who do have a district to come over temporarily. It doesn't matter if this is called English or Commons, and it doesn't matter if there is another district for all the random other guys to speak in, because they'll always go to one that speaks the common language with the largest population, just as they always have. Deal with it.

Mods->
I started this thread as a discussion hoping to get a message from a community relations person to give us information on why this took place , its clear there not going to bother and well its turned more into a thread of arguments rather than discussion due to people not reading posts.
->Close it you want , its not going anywhere anymore.

Yes it makes it hard for me to understand some people in pugs as they seem to bark instructions in a language foreign to my own :P

I can't believe some of the complaints made in this thread.

The way some of you complain, you'd think the game is no longer playable because of the name change. In that case, it looks like its time to play a different game. And don't worry, Guild Wars will still have enough whiners to fill your big shoes when you leave.

As the original poster has no problem with it, and it's had multiple issues already, with a few posts having to be removed yesterday for continuing the country bashing, or responding to said post, I'm going to close this thread. I don't believe any more constructive discussion is going to come of it at this point, and the actuality backs this.

For those just looking for the Gaile post in here,
